External Storage Devices

NOTE: When a drive configured for fault tolerance is replaced, the replacement drive will
automatically begin restoring when it is installed. When a drive is in the process of being
restored, the Online LED will flash green. The LED will continue to flash until the drive is
completely restored.
Optional mass storage devices can be connected to the ProLiant 8500 by
installing a PCI expansion board with an external connector.
For information on attaching to PCI expansion boards refer to the ProLiant
SCSI Cabling Guide. For information on adding or removing PCI Hot Plug
Expansion Boards see the "Adding Expansion Boards" section later in this
chapter.
To install an external storage device, refer to the installation documentation
that came with the external storage device. The following illustration provides
only an overview of this installation.
1. If the server is on, place it in Standby mode and disconnect the power
cord(s). See Chapter 2, "Server Installation."
2. If the external storage device is on, disconnect the power.
3. Connect one end of the SCSI cable to the external Very High Density
connector on the rear panel of the server.
4. Connect the other end of the SCSI cable to the appropriate external
SCSI connector on the rear panel of the external storage device.
