Step 9: Connect a Demand Response Controller
(Australia and New Zealand only)
Australia installations may require a Demand Response Enabling Device (DRED) to be
connected to the Powerwall System, to comply with utility regulations for controlling output
power. Tesla supports the FuturePoint Sunspec Demand Response Controller (DRC),
FuturePoint part number 006A-SUNS, as the interface hardware to translate the DRED signals
into Modbus commands. The DRC is provided by the site or the contractor. The DRED is
controlled by the Electricity Network Operator and, in turn, sends signals to the DRC that
instruct the Powerwall inverter via the Sunspec Interface to take the required action.
NOTE: All regions except Australia and New Zealand can skip this procedure.
1. Install the Sunspec DRC enclosure as close as possible to the Backup Energy Gateway.
2. Mount the DRC vertically on a wall or similar structure with the conduit entry on the bottom,
as described in the FuturePoint Sunspec DRC User Guide.
3. Provide a single phase, 230 VAC, minimum 10A circuit from the existing premise electrical
system and connect it to the Sunspec DRC 230 VAC power supply terminals. The circuit shall
be designed per installation code by the design engineer for the project.
4. Use an Ethernet cable to connect the Sunspec Ethernet port to the Ethernet port inside the
Tesla Backup Gateway. The Ethernet port in the Backup Gateway functions as a DHCP client,
and the TCP port on the Sunspec DRC has built-in DHCP server. No other hardware is required
for direct connection or control of the Powerwall inverter.
5. Connect the AS4755 DRED input port on the Sunspec DRC to a site- or contractor-supplied
AS4755 compliant Demand Response Enabling Device (DRED).
6. Affix supported Demand Response modes onto the interface port on the Future Point
device and clearly mark the supported mode with an "X." DRM mode 0 is mandatory and
supported as default, with additional modes available upon request from Tesla.
For full installation details, refer to the FuturePoint Sunspec DRC User Guide.
