Replacing SIMMs

Before replacing SIMMs, be aware of the following points:
When you install SIMMs, you must completely fill at least one bank; that is, you
must completely fill both sockets of the bank.
The computer automatically detects the installed memory, so it does not matter
which bank is used, as long as both sockets are filled.
Both SIMMs in one bank must be the same size. For instance, you cannot install
an 8 MB SIMM in one socket of bank 0 and a 16 MB SIMM in the other socket
of bank 0. However, you could use different size SIMMs in different banks.
To replace SIMMs, perform the following procedure and refer to Figure 4-30.
1. Position the SIMM at a 45° angle relative to the system board. Make sure the small
notch in the middle of the bottom edge of the SIMM aligns with the notch in the
SIMM socket.
2. With the SIMM chips facing the far edge of the system board, insert the bottom edge
of the SIMM into the socket, making sure the SIMM is seated firmly.
3. Hold the SIMM at each end and gently push the top edge forward until the SIMM
snaps in place.
4. Perform steps 1 through 3 for each remaining SIMM.
5. Set the computer upright.
6. Replace the computer's right-side panel (refer to section 4.2.2.), as viewed from the
rear.
7. Connect the power cord and all external cables to the computer and turn on the power.

Real-Time Clock (RTC) Battery

This section covers the removal and replacement of the RTC battery.

Removing the RTC Battery

To remove the RTC battery, perform the following procedure and refer to Figure 4-31.
1. Turn off power to the computer, then disconnect the power cord and all external
cables connected to the computer.
2. Remove the computer's right-side panel (refer to section 4.2.1.), as viewed from the
rear.
3. Lay the computer on its side, so that you are looking down into the computer at the
RTC Battery. Carefully push cables out of the way as necessary.
4. Using a small, flat-bladed screwdriver, gently pry the battery free from its socket.
