Procedure 4
The purpose of this procedure is to determine if the reported problem is boot-failure related.
To perform this procedure, begin with Check 1 and continue as instructed.
Check 1
(A) Insert a known good bootable MS-DOS diskette into the FDD. (B) Attempt
to boot from the FDD.
If the system boots from the FDD, perform Check 2. If the system does not boot
from the FDD, perform the Boot Failure Troubleshooting Process.
Check 2
Attempt to access the HDD from the FDD.
If the HDD can be accessed from the FDD, perform Procedure 6. If the HDD
cannot be accessed from the FDD, perform Procedure 5.
Procedure 5
The purpose of this procedure is to determine if the data cable that connects the HDD to the
system board is defective. To perform this procedure, begin with Check 1 and continue as
instructed.
Check 1
(A) Disconnect the CD-ROM data cable and use it in place of the HDD data cable
(refer to section 4.1.3.2.). (B) Remove any diskette from the FDD.
Reboot the system.
If the system reboots, perform Check 2. If the system does not reboot, reconnect
the CD-ROM and HDD data cables and perform Procedure 8.
Check 2
(A) Replace the defective HDD cable (also, reconnect the CD-ROM data cable)
(B) Perform Procedure 6.
Procedure 6
The purpose of this procedure is to determine if a virus is causing the HDD problem. To
perform this procedure, begin with Check 1 and continue as instructed.
Check 1
Perform a virus scan on the HDD.
If no viruses are detected, perform Procedure 7. If a virus is detected, perform
Check 2.
NOTE: Before performing the next Check, be advised that virus' should not be
removed without the customer's consent. Also, advise the customer that the
system will become infected again, if the contaminated disk(s) is reused.
Check 2
(A) Remove the virus. (B) Perform Procedure 7.
