Air Compressor Operation Without A
Tank
When using air without a tank and a partial
air load, pressure will fluctuate as the ad-
justable pressure switch cycles the com-
pressor. When air is not being used, the
compressor case pressure reduces and a
check valve on the outlet of the compres-
sor maintains air pressure downstream of
the compressor. When air is used after the
engine idles, the compressor starts pump-
ing air to pressurize the compressor case
and then provide air output. Depending on
the amount of air used, a temporary pres-
sure drop may occur on the air outlet.

Using Air Tools
Air tools up to and including most 1/2 in.
impact wrenches will operate with accept-
able performance running without a tank.
Larger air usage from larger tools may re-
sult in a quick pressure drop when using
the tool, most noticeably after the engine
has idled.
If a pressure drop is noticed, three meth-
ods can be used to operate the air tool
without a tank:

Continue operating the tool to ride
through the pressure drop.

Optional Air Tank

Operate the tool briefly to activate the
compressor, wait 3 to 5 seconds, then
start using the tool. This method allows the
compressor to build pressure in prepara-
tion for air output.

Add a 3−gallon minimum air tank to the
air line. The added air volume will supple-
ment the air output until the compressor
builds pressure.
For air usage greater than the compressor
output (30 CFM), an air tank is recom-
mended to supplement air output for inter-
mittent use. The more the continuous CFM
of the tool exceeds the rating of the com-
pressor, the larger the tank that is needed
for proper tool performance.
