1. Ai1 versions The Ai1 is an All-in-One intelligent monitoring system that comes in two varieties (images not to scale): Ai1BUOY for buoy mounted Ai1POLE for pole mounted applications applications While most images throughout this manual refer to the Ai1BUOY version, the operational concepts, internal electronics, and software is consistent across models.
-RADOUT A radio base station that outputs a customized report from the Ai1 via a local RS232 interface The Iridium SBD system is analogous to SMS in that it is a short packet of data. The sending of SBD data depends on a clear view of the sky and enough retries to send data while individual Iridium satellites are available overhead.
Many integrated enhancements may be included at the time of order. These enhancements may be combined within the limit of the Ai1 I/O. A configurator spreadsheet is available which describes the I/O utilization for each option and confirms that the Ai1 has capacity.
Ai1POLE via the M12 universal wiring system. The display for the Ai1POLE is typically mounted at eye level on the same pole as the Ai1. The display includes a waterproof button for program control. A short press on the button turns on...
-SOA. EXO Signal Output Adapter (SOA) Integrated inside the Ai1 with 4 wire connection using the “Custom” terminals. Often combined with the-6F bulkhead connector supplied prewired into the SOA ports. The SOA is wired to allow both the EXO2 and EXO3 sondes to be used.
2. Ai1BUOY The Ai1BUOY is commonly used with the YSI DB600 buoy, easily assembled into a rugged environmental monitoring platform for low-sea-state and freshwater applications. The platform includes all required components (Ai1BUOY, floatation buoy, instrument tube, navigation lantern) an is commonly used with YSI EXO sondes and Aanderra DCS doppler current sensors for complete monitoring.
2.3 Wiring The wiring and control of the Ai1 is via the terminal plate at the bottom of the system, protected behind a clear acrylic plate with an o-ring seal. Cable entry can be via the clear plate or via glands inside the side of the housing, depending on the application.
Figure 4 - Terminal Plate Schematic 2.4 USB Port It is possible to power the Ai1 using the USB port to allow easy configuration, program and firmware uploads and basic operation. While powered from the USB port alone, functionality is limited. USB power does not power the internal modem, the SW12V port, and voltage from Vx1 and Vx2 are limited to 2.5V.
2.5 Gland Plate The Ai1 is supplied with a 6mm clear acrylic plate with various laser-cut holes as described in Figure 6. The Standard gland plate included with the Ai1BUOY has two holes to suit a Micro Circular bulkhead connector at the locations identified by “Sensor 1”...

threading. A rear-nut ensures the seal is flat on the gland plate face. If the Micro-circular port is to be used, this port may be tapped with an M12 thread to suit an M12 gland, or a PG7 thread for a PG7 gland. Both thread sizes suit this hole. •...
If pipes with a diameter less than 38mm are to be used, an optional kit of Two 38mm ID M8 U-bolts should be purchased. It is also possible to screw the Ai1 bracket to a flat vertical surface using the 6 x 5mm diameter holes as illustrated in the drawing below.
Page 18
A kit is available that includes a special joint for 32NB or 40NB poles, that allows lowering of the pole to access the Ai1 and top mounted sensors down to ground level. The joint can be locked to prevent unauthorized lowering.
The Ai1 uses the M12 connector as a highly reliable, waterproof standardized connection system. The Ai1POLE is supplied with a female 5-pin M12 sensor connector on the Ai1 side panel for connection with a variety of sensor options. The complete range of M12 options includes: SEN1 The most common sensor connection method.
Page 20
It is possible to order an additional M12 sensor connector for adding a second sensor. A second port for an M12 connector is available on the side of the Ai1, fitted with a bung to keep the port sealed. The sensor connector is supplied as a kit including the panel mounted connector, molded cable, and field wireable connector.
If the Ai1POLE is ordered with the RS485 option, the port is wired to suit Uncured epoxy requires special handling through shipping and so are not included with the Ai1 materials. A wide variety of two-part epoxies are locally purchased (Amazon, Walmart, Bunnings), with approximately 3g required per connector.

Only if ordered with analog output option, RS232 mode is default The wiring inside the Ai1 uses a JST connector which has different colors. JST Red=M12 Brown, White = White, Green = Yellow, Black = Black and Grey = Orange.
3.8 Custom Bulkhead Connectors The AI1 can fit a variety of custom bulkhead connectors to suit almost any sensor. The standard M12 connector hole may be enlarged, or a blanking plug can be supplied for another location to be used. The ideal location for larger connectors is at the bottom right-hand corner of the Ai1 enclosure, such as the YSI ProDSS / ProSWAP connector fitted in Figure NN.
3.9 Bulkhead Adapters The Ai1 is designed with a wide variety of bulkhead adapters that allow easy expansion and customization of the Ai1 capabilities, in a simple to install design. The bulkhead adapters all use the M12 sensor connection system. Surge protection is typically included with the bulkhead adapters, to protect the Ai1 from lightning induced surges on the incoming lines.

point. Highlight the Public table and use the scroll bar to review all the information, which is divided into three sections – Status (at the top), Control and Measurements. To see the latest sensor measurements, double click on ReadNow, set it to non-zero (i.e., -1) and the program will measure the connected sensors. Scroll down to view the Measurements section.
4.1.3 Inputs & Outputs The Ai1 has a wide variety of inputs and outputs. The internal options are wired to use the best port for the type of option, as summarized in the table below. In general, a port can only be used by one option. For instance, the accelerometer can not be used with the internal Pressure Sensor or SOA as they all use SE3 (Single Ended analog input number 3), however Vx1 and Vx2 may be used by multiple options.
Page 32
Description This port may be used to provide 16 to 32V inputs to power the Ai1 or charge the batteries. This is commonly used on EXT PWR models to operate the Ai1 from 24V. The Ai1 has an internal regulator to regulate this voltage to 12.8V for internal peripherals (and available from the BAT port even if a...

20 to 40mA depending on temperature. As the Ai1 takes the current sensor measurement while it is active (i.e., not in low power sleep) the current is typically 20 to 25mA higher than during the datalogger sleep phase.
When using a lantern, it is turned OFF for shipping, to prevent battery discharging. The lantern must be turned on prior to mounting on the top of the Ai1. Open the waterproof cover on the underside of the lantern. The ON/OFF switch is accessible below the battery, next to the flash code rotary switch.
Earlier spring-steel bird spike kit The bird spike kit is fitted on the top of the Ai1 using the preinstalled M6 countersunk screws arranged on a 100mm x 100mm grid. A total of 9 spikes are fitted to each plastic strip (as shown in Figure 21), to cover each end, and allow for the lantern to fit in between (as shown in Figure 22).
6. Training The Ai1 is designed to be as simple as possible while remaining versatile to a variety of applications. At the heart of the Ai1 is a Campbell Scientific CR300 datalogger. If you have never used an Ai1, or a Campbell Scientific datalogger, you will benefit from the watching video resources to introduce you to the concepts and techniques discussed in this guide.
SDI12. It is possible to detail the sequence of these parameters and their measurements units at each stage in the program, or to treat the Ai1 as a black box with the measurements being named only once they arrive at the web portal.

The red wire may be left disconnected for sensors using internal batteries, connected to 12V if continuously powered, or connected to SW12V if power is controlled by the program. When the Ai1 is supplied with a RS485 or SOA interface, use the 4-terminal custom expansion port with color codes matching the wire colors.
Configuration for details on selecting the water quality parameters, units and their sequence, as below: The measurements for the sonde are displayed in the Public table viewed from the Data Monitor tab. The Ai1 does not know the name of each parameter or their units but displays them in the same sequence as configured in the KOR software, reporting WQ1 through to WQ10.
It is recommended that you include batteries in the sonde, and set up the sonde for logging under the deployment configuration. That way, if the Ai1 fails to record for any reason, the sonde will also include a record of the data that may be manually downloaded.
Page 45
Use CallTable YSISondeMeta to store meta data about the sonde (i.e., Product, Model, Sub Model, Ports, Serial Number and Sonde Type) The AI1 library includes all these function calls in a subroutine to manage the sonde read, with retries. Refer to the program supplied with your Ai1 for the latest version.

7.10 Level Sensors The Ai1 includes calculations for referencing level data to benchmarks or datums and deriving flow or discharge information. The method applies to all types of level sensors supported, from hydrostatic pressure sensors through to radar or ultrasonic non-contact sensors. The steps involved are: 7.10.1 Measure the level (or distance) sensor.
5.5m, the water surface would be 5m above sea level. A differential pressure sensor is vented inside the Ai1 to provide protection against condensation inside the vent tube. This only applies to the Ai1BUOY which is a sealed enclosure, while other Ai1 designs are vented.
Precipitation sensors on the Ai1 do not have a heater and are not suitable for measuring solid precipitation such as snow or ice. Precipitation sensors listed in the table above use sensing techniques suitable for mounting on moving buoy platforms, although the Met10 may underestimate rainfall on moving platforms with excessive tilt.
For maximum life, lubricate the pins with dielectric grease before mating to prevent corrosion. The grease supplied with the sonde is suitable. Refer to Table 3 on page 22 for details on the wiring inside the Ai1. Page | 56...

The testing with a new OS library file is up to the end user to ensure compatibility with the Ai1 hardware configuration provided. Backward compatibility is not guaranteed. All library files are open- source and may be user edited if desired.
11. Sensor Measurement 11.1 Automatic The program uses configurable constants to determine the timing of various measurement operations such as when to apply power to the sensor, and how frequently to measure and store the data. A typical example is with an EXO Sonde, every 5s (SCAN_INTERVAL_S) the program will scan for user input and check the timing requirements.
12.1 Address Information The Ai1 shipping documentation will specify the URL, Port, TCP Password and Pakbus Address that must be used for each station. The program shipped from the factory automatically configures these for you. If you are unsure of the configuration and have lost your shipping documents, connect directly to the Ai1 using the USB port and you can read the settings direct from the unit (except TCP Password if used).
Longitude A call-back is where the Ai1 initiates a TCP/IP connection to a server on a specific port suitable for the proposed protocol. The server software would then manage the data transfer process. Supports Modbus ASCII, Modbus RTU and/or Modbus TCP.
To set up Hydrosphere, two steps are required, first in Hydrosphere and then in the datalogger program. 13.3.1 Hydrosphere Configuration The Ai1 includes a program that periodically connects to Hydrosphere and sends a buffer of 5 collected data sets (to backfill historical data during periods of communications outages).
