Manual objectives

This instruction book is to ensure the safe and successful operation
and maintenance of the AMPGARD Reduced Voltage Soft Starter
(RVSS). This equipment may be installed as an individual structure or
may be part of a lineup of AMPGARD products.
For information about the installation of AMPGARD RVSS, see
Instruction Booklet IB020004EN.
This document is intended for use by personnel familiar with solid-
state power equipment power components and Medium Voltage
power electronics and control. It contains information that which
will assist the user in configuring, operating, maintaining and
troubleshooting the Eaton AMPGARD RVSS Medium Voltage Solid-
State Soft Starter.

Starter features

The AMPGARD RVSS is designed to start medium voltage motors
at reduced voltages with specific ramp times and currents. It uses
Silicon Controlled power Rectifiers (SCRs) to provide variable voltage
three phase AC during a motor start, then switches motor power
from the variable AC source to a direct line connection.
The AMPGARD RVSS maintains active control of a start cycle,
monitoring and controlling motor current during the start. It includes
motor protection features, power electronics protection features,
Instruction Booklet IB020003EN
and is intended to provide motor starting under circumstances that
would otherwise prevent a successful motor start, such as soft line
conditions, while reducing motor fatigue due to excessive starting
currents.
AMPGARD RVSS are designed, assembled and tested to meet all
applicable UL standards.
The major components, i.e., contactor, isolating switch, fuses,
EMR-3000 and EMR-4000 are UL recognized.
UL or CSA labeling of a specific starter requires review to ensure
that all requested modifications and auxiliary devices meet the
appropriate standards.
Refer to factory when specified.
