1.3.2
AMPGARD RVSS enclosure
An AMPGARD 400 Amp RVSS soft-starter unit consists of a
standard AMPGARD structure that is 36 inches wide by 30 inches
deep by 92 inches tall, including the main bus. The unit includes
top-mounted horizontal bus for integration into an AMPGARD lineup
if desired. The unit top half is referred to as the upper cell and the
bottom half as the lower cell. If the starter is not to be part of an
AMPGARD lineup, a transition compartment will likely be included,
to provide a transition from incoming cables to the horizontal
through bus.
1.3.2.1
Upper Cell
The upper cell consists of a full voltage starter with a non-load
break isolation switch, medium voltage current limiting fuses,
an AMPGARD SL three-pole vacuum contactor, control power
transformer, potential transformer, and output phase current
transformers. A bus connection feeds power from the upper cell
contactor to the SCR truck in the lower cell (see Figure 17).
A low voltage control compartment is located on the front of the
upper cell medium voltage door. (See Figure 16 and Figure 18).
Refer to IB48041 (Instructions for AMPGARD 400 Ampere Medium
Voltage Starter) for operating and maintenance instructions on the
upper cell.
See Section 6 for details on the Upper Cell.

1.3.2.2 Lower Cell
The lower cell consists of a welded frame with rails for the
AMPGARD RVSS truck assembly. There is a medium voltage door
with a flange that prevents access to the lower cell until the isolation
switch and upper door have been opened, to ensure that line voltage
is not present. The RVSS truck assembly is shown racked into place
in Figure 17.
A second low voltage compartment is located on the lower cell front
door. The keypad operator interface (Monitoring User Interface) is
located on the front of the low voltage door and is used to configure
the Soft-Starter control system (See Figure
The control system for the AMPGARD RVSS is located in this
low voltage compartment. Components include the Base Control
Module, Monitoring User Interface, I/O Board, 24 VDC and 48 VDC
power supplies, relays and current RFI filter. (See Figure 21).
1.3.3
1.3.3.1
Control power for the AMPGARD RVSS Soft Starter comes
from the control power transformer in the upper cell. The CPT
receives primary voltage from the line and provides 120 VAC to
the control system. In addition to the relay and sequencing loads,
the CPT powers two DC power supplies. 24 VDC powers the
control electronics, and 48 VDC powers the SCR Truck gate firing
electronics.
1.3.3.2
The AMPGARD RVSS Power Poles containing the power SCRs,
heat sinks, gate driver and snubber boards and other electronics are
mounted on an easy to remove, roll out truck assembly. A second
