Starting and Stopping the
Engine
Ignition lock
The vehicle key is replaced by an operating device in
the ignition lock. The vehicle key only needs to be
carried on your person.

In ignition lock setting 0 the engine and ignition are
off.
1 – Ignition on
All electrical equipment can be switched on. The
warning lights in the instrument cluster come on as
a lamp check.
Information
If no electrical equipment is switched on for 10 mi-
nutes after the ignition is switched on, the ignition
has to be switched on again. The operating device
must first be turned to ignition lock position 0 (initial
position).
2 – Start engine
After the engine is started, the operating device au-
tomatically returns from position 2 to position 1.
Starting the engine
1. Press the brake pedal.
2. Vehicles with manual transmission: Press the
clutch pedal down fully and keep it pressed.
3. Vehicles with manual transmission: Move the
gear lever to neutral.
4. Vehicles with PDK: Press the P button on the
selector lever or select operating mode N.
5. Do not press the accelerator pedal.
6. Turn the operating device back to ignition lock
position 2. Do not use the starter for more than
approx. 10 seconds.
The starting process is carried out and com-
pleted automatically as soon as ignition lock po-
sition 2 (start engine) is reached.
e If necessary, wait for about 10 seconds and then
repeat the starting process. First turn the oper-
ating device back to ignition lock position 0 (ini-
tial position).
Do not warm up the engine when stationary.
Drive off immediately. Avoid high engine speeds
and full throttle until the engine has reached op-
erating temperature.

Switching off the engine
NOTICE
An unattended vehicle with a running engine is po-
tentially hazardous. If warning lights come on to in-
dicate improper operation, no one would be present
to observe the light and turn off the engine.
e Never leave the engine idling unattended.
Inactive power steering
WARNING
and brake booster
The steering assistance and brake booster are only
operative when the engine is running. Consequently,
much greater force needs to be applied for steering
and braking when the engine is stopped.
e Only switch off the ignition once the vehicle has
come to a standstill.
1. Stop the vehicle.
2. Press the brake pedal.
3. Turn the operating device back to ignition lock
position 0.
e When leaving the vehicle, apply the electric
parking brake and, in the case of vehicles with
PDK, press button P or, in the case of vehicles
with manual transmission, engage 1st gear or
reverse.
