System limitations
External ultrasound waves (e.g. air brakes from other
vehicles, road sweeping machines, pneumatic ham-
mers) can interfere with obstacle detection.
The system cannot detect the following:
– Sound-absorbing obstacles (e.g. wintery condi-
tions, powder snow, clothing made from fabric,
hide or fur).
– Sound-reflecting obstacles (e.g. glass surfaces,
flat enameled surfaces).
– Very thin obstacles (e.g. thin posts).
– Obstacles, if the sensors or cameras are very
dirty or covered, e.g. by dust, dirt, snow or ice.
Functions
ParkAssist visually and audibly indicates to the driver
the distance between the vehicle and an obstacle
during parking and maneuvering.
Obstacles located in front of and behind the vehicle
are indicated by means of different colored fields in
the PCM. These fields show the contour of the ob-
stacles as well as their distance from the vehicle.
Distance measurement
Fig. 136: Ultrasound sensors for distance measurement
The ultrasound sensors A in the rear and front
bumpers measure the distance to the nearest ob-
stacle. A detected obstacle is reported by an inter-
mittent tone. The intervals shorten as the vehicle
approaches the obstacle. When the distance is less
than approx. 12 in. (30 cm), a continuous tone
sounds.
Obstacles above and below the sensors cannot be
detected.
You can adjust the volume of the warning tones in
the PCM.
> Please see chapter "Vehicle Settings" on
page 270.
Activating ParkAssist

approx. 9 mph (15 km/h))
