Acronyms and Definition of Terms

The following are acronyms and definition of terms used throughout this manual.
• Acme Screw - A leadscrew that translates the hoist drum, motor, and gearbox.
• Competent Person - Person who has such practical and theoretical knowledge and such
experience as is necessary to carry out the work and is aware of the limits of his/her own
competence, expertise and knowledge.
• Control System - ETC control equipment associated with the operation of the hoist or hoist
system.
• Hazard - Potential source of harm.
• Hoist Capacity - Maximum load capacity applied to a hoist or hoist system. This includes all
attached components and accessories in the load path.
• Line Set - The combination of a hoist, load-bearing equipment and load-carrying device.
• Machinery Installation - The integration of load-bearing equipment, drive system, load-carrying
devices and scenic elements.
• Point Load - A load that is localized to a specific location.
• QT1-C Field Service Kit - The QT1-C Field Service Kit is provided to allow use of the hoist without
the presence of a primary control system.
• Qualified Person - Person who, by possession of a recognized degree or certificate of professional
standing, or who by extensive knowledge, training and experience, has demonstrated the ability
to solve problems relating to the subject matter and work.
• Risk - Combination of the probability of occurrence of harm and the severity of the harm.
• Risk Assessment - The systematic examination of the machinery installation in order to identify
relevant hazards, estimate and evaluate related risks and put in place protective measures to
reduce the risk to an acceptable level.
• 3 Phase - Refers to a system of power distribution of 3 electric power conductors carrying
alternating current voltages that are offset by 120° from each other.
• Trained/Authorized Person - A person trained or authorized by ETC to perform work on the
Vortek hoist and QT1-C Field Service Kit.
• Uniform Distributed Load (UDL) - A load that is constant over a certain distance.
• Working Load Limit (WLL) - The maximum load (mass) that the user can hang on the load-carrying
device (e.g., batten, truss).
NOTE:

The Working Load Limit is equal to the Hoist Capacity minus the weight of the load
securing and carrying devices.
