Introduction Welcome to the Vortek NXT Hoist Installation and Operations Manual. This manual will guide you through the operation, installation, and maintenance of the Vortek NXT hoist. Document Conventions This document uses the following conventions to draw your attention to important information.
If you are having difficulties, your most convenient resources are the references given in this document. To search more widely, try the ETC website at www.etcconnect.com. If none of these resources are sufficient, contact ETC Technical Services directly at one of the offices identified below.
• Carry out a full risk assessment for your particular application. DO’s and DON’Ts • DO NOT operate a Vortek NXT hoist without having a clear view of the attached load and load carrying device through the entire intended travel path or reliable communication with someone who does.

Do not connect a Vortek NXT hoist to a power source other than specified on the unit and in this manual. WARNING: Do not modify a Vortek NXT hoist in any way unless expressly told to do so by the manufacturer. WARNING:...
The hold-to-run control button must always be under manual operator control. WARNING: Do not use a Vortek NXT hoist if it does not appear to be in 100% perfect working order. WARNING: Do not distract the operator’s attention while they are operating the system.
The Vortek NXT hoist is designed to work with ETC hoists, controlled by Foundation, QuickTouch Preset, QuickTouch, or QuickTouch+ controls. A Vortek NXT hoist is a fixed- or variable-speed electric wire rope winch, designed for use in the entertainment and event industry.

Insert the forks completely into the slot and raise the forks and the rack to lift the crate. The second lifting point is from the side Note: When using this location, spread the forks as wide as possible; either side can be used to lift the crates. Vortek NXT Hoist Installation Manual...
The Vortek hoists are not balanced at center, so care must be taken when moving the units. Each motor end of the Vortek NXT crate will be labeled with the model number and/or line set number. Organizing the hoists as they are unloaded may help during installation.
Installation General Information on Installation Vortek NXT Hoist Installation Tool List A non-metric tool set is required for the Vortek NXT hoist installation. • 9/16” Combination Wrench • 3/4” Combination Wrench • 3/8” Drive 7/16” Socket • 3/8” Drive 1/2” Socket •...
Cut the banding and remove the poly sheeting from the hoist. Two backbone stiffeners and the Vortek NXT Hoist Installation Kit will be loosely attached on top of the unit. If you are not able to use backbone stiffeners, a third set of beam clamps may be provided. Remove these items and place them in a safe location.
Drum Load Brake Attaching Backbone Stiffeners All Vortek NXT hoist installations require the use of aluminum backbone stiffeners installed on top of the hoist backbone with two 3/8” threaded rods, four nuts and two steel backbone clamps. Note: If there is something that obstructs you from using backbone stiffeners, you have the option to use a third set of beam clamps.
Page 17
Tighten both nuts onto the backbone stiffener as shown. Make sure the threaded rod is centered across the backbone so that it does not stick out of either side of the beam clamps. Note: The beam clamps on the motor end of the hoist may be installed in the very first position.
Hoist lifting clips are provided only when ordered with the project. Contact ETC Professional Services for ordering information. WARNING: Risk of personal injury and/or damage to the hoist. Do not lift the Vortek NXT hoist using methods other than the ETC's hoist lifting clips, unless you are Vertical Mounting mounting the hoist vertically.
Page 19
Hoist Placement Motor End hoist beam clamps are secured to the hoist backbone and cannot be adjusted. You must align the Motor End of the hoist with the corresponding edge of the beam flange. This can be accomplished by using a laser level to distinguish between the leading edge of the I-beam and the Motor End beam clamp.
Page 20
With placement confirmed, tighten the beam clamp bolts to a final torque of 23-27 Nm (17-20 ft/lb) by alternating between the two clamps until the hoist backbone is contacting the I-beam, Vortek NXT Hoist Installation Manual...

adding support. The threaded rod bends and applies constant pressure to the backbone stiffeners to minimalize vibration and noise. Repeat for the Tail End set of beam clamps. Using a 1/4" allen key, tighten all four 5/16 x 18 socket head screws on the two Tail End sliding beam clamps to 13.5 Nm (10 ft/lb).
Page 22
The Vortek NXT hoists have up to 7 lift lines per batten; depending on the installation, all lift lines may come out of the end of the hoist or there may be one or two cables coming directly out of the bottom of the unit at either end.
Do not cut the wire rope of double-purchase units. These must be terminated at the I-beams on the dead-off connection. Vortek NXT hoists use 3/16” wire rope for all standard installations. Copper Nicropress sleeves and thimbles for 3/16" wire rope are provided for use to terminate the cable end to the turnbuckle or trim chain or RACA.
Vertical Mounting The standard mounting method of a Vortek NXT hoist is to be hung from the structural steel in a horizontal position. The previous sections detailed this method of mounting the hoist. If you are planning to mount the hoist vertically, the following procedure provides some guidelines for you to follow.
Page 25
Terminate the two thimbles from the motor end sling to a shackle and the two thimbles from the tail end sling to another shackle. Terminate both of these shackles to a single lifting shackle. With an appropriately sized lifting device, slowly lift the hoist from its crate until it is roughly 1.2 m (4’-0") above the floor.

System Setup and Test Once the hoist installation procedure is complete, you should verify the wiring of the Power and Control Distribution box (PCD box) and verify that the hoist functions properly. You should also set the upper and lower travel limits for the hoist. Verify Proper Wiring Locate the PCD box that will supply power and control data to the hoist.
Page 28
Once the hoist is stopped, disconnect power and verify the wiring at the PCD circuit breaker once again. If the circuit breaker wiring is correct, contact ETC Technical Services for assistance After running the hoist for a few seconds, release the control switch.
Overtravel Limits Overtravel limits are set at the ETC factory as a relative measurement [approximately 6” (152mm)] to the upper and lower limits set by the installer. In other words, upper overtravel will be set at roughly 6”...
Page 30
It is important to return the batten to its normal operating range before testing the overtravel limit. Testing the overtravel limit with full momentum of the hoist is the desired outcome of returning the hoist to its normal operating range. Vortek NXT Hoist Installation Manual...
Page 31
If the hoist was purposefully moved into an overtravel condition, the following procedure can move the hoist out of the overtravel condition. If the hoist was moved into this condition unintentionally, contact your authorized ETC dealer or ETC technical services representative. Access the motor control box.
Service and Maintenance The Vortek NXT hoist can only be serviced by an ETC trained/authorized person. Note: Records of Standard Inspection and Maintenance Check List must be kept by the owner and must be signed and dated by the person carrying out the inspections and maintenance.
Motor Gearbox Inspection and Maintenance Instructions Inspection of the motor brake, mechanical brake, motor gearbox and frequency drive are required according to the indications below. Inspection and maintenance must be performed by an ETC trained/ authorized person. WARNING: Always disconnect and lock out the hoist main electrical connection from its power supply before performing any maintenance work inside the motor control box.
Page 35
Perform the following maintenance procedure for the motor end of the hoist. Turn off power at the circuit breaker and unplug the communications plug from the top of the Vortek NXT hoist. Open the control panel and perform pull tests for your all wires. Tighten as needed.
Page 36
Loft Block Maintenance The Vortek NXT loft block has sealed bearings and usually needs minimal maintenance, however it is still important to inspect other components of the hardware. Verify the beam clamp bolt and nut are properly torqued at 23-27 Nm (17-20 ft/lb).
