2.1. Hardware Types and Technical Data
The configuration of Digital Gateway depends on one hand on the selected communication
protocol to the DCS control system or SCADA system and on the other hand on the fieldbus
protocol to the field devices which can be Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP.

Modbus RTU (RS485)
As one segment of Modbus RTU is only able to support 32 devices,
Digital Gateway for M10x-M is supplied with an additional Serial inter-
face card which provides four Modbus RTU port to support a maxi-
mum of 128 number of devices
Modbus TCP
One Digital Gateway supports up to 128 field devices connected via
Ethernet TCP/IP (Modbus TCP protocol). Here the LAN3 port of the
Digital Gateway is utilized for the field device communication.
