Overview
This chapter describes the tests you can perform on the SC 553 DSU. You should test the equip-
ment when it is first installed to verify correct installation. After the equipment is in service you can
use the tests to diagnose any problems that occur in the operation of the DSU or the data com-
munications system.
There are four means by which you can command tests on the DSU:
SNMP controller
Terminal interface Diagnostic screen
Front panel switches T1, CH, and RL
DTE signals on the EIA Remote Digital Loop and EIA Local Loop leads
This chapter of the manual deals with terminal interface, front panel, and DTE interface tests. The
tests that you can perform with the terminal interface are also available when you use an SNMP
controller. Those two means of control permit you to perform the tests that you can command with
front panel switches and with the EIA control leads, and a large number of others as well. For
information on testing the DSU from an SNMP controller, consult documentation for the controller
you are using.
On the terminal interface Diagnostics screen, tests are broken into three categories:
T1 Tests
Channel Tests
DS0 Tests
Each category provides a Self Test that can be used, in cooperation with another site, to perform
end-to-end testing. The T1 and Channel categories each provide a variety of loopbacks, both toward
the local DTE interface and toward the network. The DS0 category provides a loopback toward the
network and a round-trip Circuit Delay test.
