Chapter 2:
Overview
This chapter describes the installation of the SC 553 DSU. The DSU can be installed in a variety of
16-slot SpectraComm shelves, in a 10-slot MultiPak enclosure, or in a 2-slot SpectraComm 2000
shelf.

differences between them. The shelves are designed to be rack mounted. The MultiPak is designed
to be placed on a table or other flat surface. The SC 2000 shelf may be either rack mounted or wall
mounted.
The SC 553 DSU is shipped pre-assembled, tested, and ready to use. The normal procedure after
unpacking the unit is to insert it in its intended shelf slot and perform the Preoperational Check
described in this chapter. When the test is successfully completed you may make the DSU cable
connections.
The SC 553 DSU should be installed in a ventilated area where the ambient temperature does not
exceed 122°F (50°C). Do not install the DSU above other equipment that generates large amounts
of heat (e.g., power supplies).

Housings

A rack-mountable SpectraComm 5000 shelf can house up to 16 plug-ins and be installed in 19- and
23-inch wide equipment racks. A MultiPak enclosure can house up to 10 plug-ins, and a
SpectraComm 2000 shelf can house 2 plug-in pc cards. In any of the three housings the SC 553 DSU
can be installed in any card slot.
The SC 5000 shelf and the MultiPak enclosure each include a backplane that supports a manage-
ment bus for the transfer of management data between an SCM card and the managed devices in
the housing. The SCM card functions as an SNMP agent for the control of a variety of compatible
devices. For some devices, including the SC 553 DSU, the SCM card also provides access to
terminal interface functionality. In addition to the SC 553 DSU, SCM-compatible devices include
GDC V.F 28.8 and Dual V.34 modems, and the data set emulators and line terminating units that
compose a SpectraComm 5000 system. A housing can contain a single SCM card, or two SCM
cards installed as a primary and a backup.
Note
If an SC 553 DSU is removed and replaced by another SC 553 DSU in the same slot, the SCM card can
automatically configure the new DSU with the Network, Channel, Cascade, and Alarm Configuration op-
tion settings that were in effect for the old DSU.
