Overview
This chapter begins by describing the functions of the SC 553 DSU front panel indicator displays
and limited test functions.
It then describes management features available for performing configuration, monitoring, and
diagnostics on the DSU. Management can be performed by means of a Simple Network
Management Protocol (SNMP) controller, such as the GDC TEAM SC 553 application, or by
means of the DSU's terminal interface functionality. The DSU's installation environment affects
how it can be managed.
Specifics of SNMP control depend on the application that you use, and so are beyond the scope of
this manual. Consult the manual for your SNMP controller for detailed instructions on the use of its
functions. As a supplement to those instructions, this manual provides information specific to the
SC 553 DSU, in particular the MIB tables that are contained in Appendix C, Alarm Definitions .
This chapter does provide instructions for using the terminal interface. The terminal interface
enables you to alter the configuration of the DSU, invoke diagnostic test functions, view the current
status of DTE interface signals and unit alarm conditions, and display information on the unit.
Chapter 4, Tests , describes, in detail, the actual test procedures you can perform by means of the
terminal interface diagnostic functions.
