Testing for leakage

The flow meter has three reference points with the
aid of which the leakage in the system being test-
ed can be checked on the basis of the particular
EVAP diagnostic trouble code. The reference points
0.25 mm (0.010"), 0.5 mm (0.020") and 1.0 mm
(0.040") correspond to the permissible standard
requirements of vehicle manufacturers.
1. Fill the system with the tester set to "TEST" until the
ball in the flow meter no longer drops.

Filling an EVAP system takes about two minutes.
2. Observe to which point the ball drops.
3. Read the leakage value on the scale of the flow
meter.
4. Compare the value with the permissible leakage
requirements of the manufacturer.

If the measured value is smaller than the permissible
leakage requirement of the manufacturer (ball po-
sition is below the respective reference point), the
leakage test is passed.

If the measured value is larger than the permissible
leakage requirement of the manufacturer (ball po-
sition is above the respective reference point), the
leakage test is not passed.
Determining the location of leakage

In order to fill the system being tested with smoke
quickly, we recommend purging the system at one
location (e. g. EVAP exhaust (VENT)) so that the
existing "smoke-free" air can escape.
1. Release the smoke-free air from the system.
2. Fill the system with the tester set to "SMOKE".
3. As soon as smoke appears at the opened location,
close the location again.
4. Search for the location at which smoke escapes
from the system or search for dye deposits with the
aid of the multi-function lamp.

Every dye deposit represents to a leakage location.

Seeking a leakage

When working with SMT 300, the handle and
the surface of the SMT 300 pose a burn haz-
ard. SMT 300 can reach a temperature of up
to 60 °C when used for an extended period of
time.
When working with UltraTraceUV® smoke
solution, always wear nitrile rubber protective
gloves.
When working with UltraTraceUV® smoke
solution and UV light, always wear safety
goggles.

The engine should be cold when testing the intake
or exhaust system of an engine. Small leaks may seal
as the result of thermal expansion.
1. Connect the smoke supply hose to the system being
tested.
2. Turn the smoke flow control to the setting "SMOKE".

3. Press the power key (item 1).
 The system starts to fill with smoke.

After 5 minutes, the filling gets automatically
switched off.

When switching between "SMOKE" (with smoke)
and "TEST" (without smoke), residual smoke or re-
sidual air may escape from the smoke supply hose.

Use the white light from the multi-function lamp to
search for existing smoke or UV light to search for
fluorescent deposits at the exact location of leakage.
4. Press the power key again to end filling with smoke.
