5.6. Operation

Dear User,
If operating disc mower is your first experience (previously operating with double drum
mower) then what you need is a piece of certain advice:
1. The biggest advantage of disc mowers is their lower power consumption by about 20%, lower
inertia moments and possibility of setting up mowers with larger mowing widths.
2. Some slight disadvantage might be considered less attractive, uneven stubble (upon harvest)
especially if laid grass needs to be mowed. Straight grass might however be mowed with
mower's horizontal setting and then the stubble is straight but not as nice looking as with double
or quadruple drum mower, as knives work horizontally to the ground and bowed grasses are
deflected by wind, while after mowing these get up anew what may give impression of
inaccurate mowing.
Each mower should be given tolerance for leaving some slight piece of uncut grass at knives
which cut grass forward.
Such occurrence is normal. For disc mowers it is both theoretically and physically impossible to
achieve such attractive looking stubble as for double drum mowers for knives work either
horizontally or under small angle of up to 8° in relation to the ground, and in double and
quadruple drum mowers angled over the ground (even 23°).
Despite these "disadvantages" farmers all around the world are more and more convinced by disc
mowers while modern technologies allow manufacturing very solid mowers (even up to 1000%).

5.6.1. Basic information on mowing

Optimal operating parameters
1. Inclination forward 0÷5 degrees that is approx. 4.5÷7 cm of mowing height.
2. V operation ≥ 10 km/h.
3. Keep the constans PTO rpm = 950÷1000 rpm. PTO rears > 1000 rpm may lead to leaving pieces
of uncut grass between discs. (on Client's special request: PTO rears = 470 ÷ 520 rpm. PTO rears >
540 rpm may lead to leaving pieces of uncut grass between discs.
High and laid grasses
1. Inclination forward to be increased – H = approx. 4.5 cm.
2. Operation without inclination leads to winding grass up onto drums.
3. Increase speed V ≥ 12 km/h. (the faster – the better)
4. Do not turn in grass windrow.
Optimal angle of cutterbar in relation to the ground should be between 0° and 5°. With
-
inclination bigger than 5° minor unevenness in mowed grass is likely. It slightly impairs
attractiveness of stubble after mowing however has hardly any impact on mower's operation.
Inclination of the cutterbar to the other side quality of mowing is significantly impaired and in
extreme situations, it may lead to damaging the cutting unit. When higher mowing heights are
required, use optional toppings for high mowing.
