Glossary
µg/L — Unit of TOC — 1000 µg/L = 1 mg/L
MSDS — Material Safety Data Sheet
NAMUR — Normen Ausschuss für Mess-und Regeltechnik
NDIR — Non-Dispersed Infrared light—used in the analyzer to measure the
CO
concentration in sample water
2
NEC — National Electric Code
NPOC — Non-purgable organic carbon
POC — Particulate organic carbon
peristaltic — a movement of a liquid or a gas in a tube caused by pressing
the tube closed and then moving the closed area along the tube. The
movement of the liquid or gas is caused by two different reactions to the
movement of the closed area. The first is a compression ahead of the
movement. The second is the vacuum created by the tube opening behind the
movement.
psig — pounds per square inch, gauge measurement. 1 psig = 0.068 bar =
6.85 kPa
purge gas — the gas used to move samples or reagents through in the
analyzer, also called carrier gas
sparge — removal of a chemical by passing a gas through a liquid
standard solution — a solution of deionized water and one of various
chemicals that is used as a standard for the comparison of water samples
(STD) — standard for the comparison of water samples
system flush — to wash out the system with a pure water solution to remove
impurities from previous water samples
TC — Total Carbon
TIC — Total Inorganic Carbon
TOC — Total Organic Carbon
TOC can have at least three different definitions:
– as an equivalent to NPOC (per the EPA)
– as POC plus NPOC
– as TC minus TIC
UL — Underwriter Laboratories
UV — Ultra Violet—used in the analyzer to convert organic carbon into CO
VAC — Voltage Alternating Current
VDC — Voltage Direct Current
