RS modules are not compatible with the 8001AC and 8002DC power
supplies or the 8691 SF/CPU modules. You must use the 8692 SF/CPU
with 8005AC power supplies in chassis that contain RS modules. RS
modules can interoperate with R modules. For proper system cooling, RS
modules require the high-speed cooling modules.
The following list describes the RS module architecture.

The Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 includes three hardware operating
modes:

.
The 8648GTRS modules use a two-lane design. The 8648GTRS
is potentially 2.4:1 oversubscribed on both lanes. Typical network
designs use oversubscribed modules at the building distribution layer
and nonoversubscribed links to core. Using oversubscribed modules
are cost-effective as long as the module provides strong built-in packet
QoS capabilities—R and RS modules both do so.
The 8612XLRS modules uses a three-lane design based on RSP 2.6
architecture. The 8612XLRS is potentially 4:1 oversubscribed on all
lanes.
The 8634XGRS modules uses a three-lane design based on RSP 2.6
architecture. Potential 8634XGRS oversubscription is as follows:
Lane 1 (RJ-45 and SFP): 1.6:1
Lane 2 (RJ-45 and SFP): 1.6:1
Lane 3 (XFP): 2:1
The 8648GBRS modules use a three-lane design based on RSP 2.6
architecture. The 8648GBRS is potentially 1.6:1 oversubscribed on
all lanes.
Default mode (32 000 table entries) supports up to 32 000 hardware
records. This mode supports all modules.
M mode (128 000 table entries) supports up to 128 000 hardware
records. This mode supports M and R modules only.
R mode supports R series modules and up to:
256 000 IP routes
64 000 MAC entries
Release 4.1 and earlier: 16 000 Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)
entries in R mode
Release 5.0 and later: 32 000 ARP entries in R mode
