The FET gas phase concentration is expressed as follows:
[fet]=
total gas volume of the vial + net gas phase expansion volume
The analyte mass injected into the vial is determined from the known concentration of standard solutions or the
density for pure compounds. The gas volume of the vial is dependent on the vial size.
NOTE: Teledyne Tekmar vial volume is 22.3mL (+/- 0.09% RSD).
When preparing a vial for analysis by FET consider the following:
• Final volume of the solvent in the vial should be < 20μl.
• Temperature of the sample platen should be approximately 10-20 degrees higher than the boiling point of the
solvent used to dilute the standard.
• Spiking a vial for FET analysis can be done before or after capping the vial. The techniques have the same
advantages and disadvantages as mentioned previously.
