16.1 Appendix A – FSR Usage Tips
Care and Handling
Do's:
Do handle the FSR with care.
Do gently bend the FSR in the middle of the tail.
Do adjust the sensitivity of the FSRs.
Do pull the FSR straight out of the cable. If the FSR is bent near the connector, the pins can break off
and get stuck inside the cable. If this happens, a new FSR sensor cable will need to be purchased
because the pins cannot be removed from inside the cable.
Do clean the FSRs by wiping the surface with soap and water or isopropyl alcohol.
Do replace the FSR when it is damaged or does not produce valid signals.
Do order extra FSRs so if one malfunctions, another one is available.
Do Not's:
Do not bend the FSR less than 4 mm (see photo on next page)
Do not bend the FSR by the connectors on the tail.
Do not kink or crease the FSR
Do not use sharp objects or puncture the FSR.
Do not bend the FSR near the sensing area (circle part)
Do not use adhesives like "Krazy Glue" because it may crack the FSR.
Do not immerse the FSR in liquid, e.g. water or isopropyl alcohol. The liquid will enter the vent and the
FSR will not work until the liquid inside the vent dries.
Do not use harsh chemicals on the FSRs.
NOTE: The FSRs are REPLACEABLE parts. How often the FSR needs to be replaced depends on the
application and how the FSR is handled.
16.1.1 FSR Placement Methods
Listed below are 4 possible methods to place the FSRs. The method used will affect the life of the FSR.
Bare feet only
Use double-sided medical tape to secure the sensing area of the FSR to the bottom of
the foot.
Gently bend the FSR tail so that the tail connector is on top of the foot and secure the
FSR with medical tape.
On feet inside shoes
The FSRs may be applied by this method, but the user needs to exercise care so the
fragile "FSR tails" do not get crimped.
Gently bend the FSR tail so the tail connector can be taped on top of the foot.
It is recommended that socks are worn to protect the FSRs. However, carefully put on
the socks to prevent damaging the FSRs. Check if the FSR tail is causing any
discomfort. It may be necessary to readjust the FSR tail.
Carefully put on the shoe, then recheck for any discomfort due to the placement of the
FSR tail.
Soft, smooth-bottomed slipper
This method is better than regular shoe soles because the edges of the slipper are
smooth, which minimizes fractures or malfunctioning of the FSR.
Bend the FSR tail carefully over the top of the slipper and secure it with tape.
