Introduction
The WLAN IP Telephony Manager 2245 acts as a proxy for the wireless handsets and provides
several services for them. It is connected to the same subnet as the wireless handsets. The
wireless handsets always communicate voice and signaling directly with the WLAN IP
Telephony Manager 2245, using the proprietary SpectraLink Voice Protocol (SVP).
SVP is required for quality of service (QoS) because the current IEEE 802.11a/b/g wireless
LAN standard provides no mechanism for differentiating audio packets from data packets. This
standard is undergoing revision to version 802.11e to provide functionality in an industry
standard similar to SVP, therefore ensuring high-quality voice in a mixed-client environment.
The wireless handsets are configured with the IP address of a designated WLAN Telephony
Manager 2245. As the wireless handsets register, they receive a list of IP addresses of other
WLAN Telephony Manager 2245 in the network and they distribute among other WLAN
Telephony Manager 2245 to share the load. This WLAN Telephony Manager 2245 becomes
the registration point. The list of addresses automatically updates each time the wireless
handset powers on.
If the WLAN Telephony Manager 2245 fails, the wireless handset drops active calls, then re-
registers with another WLAN IP Telephony Manager 2245 in their list. The wireless handsets
return to active state after this registration period. This failure does not affect other wireless
handsets registered on the other WLAN IP Telephony Manager 2245 units.
The recovery period for the wireless handsets on the failed WLAN IP Telephony Manager 2245
is approximately 60 seconds.
