Driving and operating
Protection Agency regulations. To
help keep fuel injectors and intake
valves clean, or if the vehicle experi‐
ences problems due to dirty injectors
or valves, look for gasoline that is ad‐
vertised as TOP TIER Detergent Gas‐
oline. Look for the TOP TIER label on
the fuel pump to ensure gasoline
meets enhanced detergency stand‐
ards developed by the auto compa‐
nies. A list of marketers providing
TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline can be
found at www.toptiergas.com.
Gasoline containing oxygenates,
such as ethers and ethanol, and re‐
formulated gasoline might be availa‐
ble in your area. We recommend that
you use this gasoline, if it complies
with the specifications described ear‐
lier.
This vehicle was not designed for fuel
that contains methanol. Do not use
fuel containing methanol. It can cor‐
rode metal parts in the fuel system
and also damage plastic and rubber
parts. That damage would not be cov‐
ered under the vehicle warranty.
Some gasolines that are not reformu‐
lated for low emissions can contain an
octane-enhancing additive called
methylcyclopentadienyl manganese
tricarbonyl (MMT); ask the attendant
where you buy gasoline whether the
fuel contains MMT. Saab does not
recommend the use of such gasoline.
Fuels containing MMT can reduce the
life of spark plugs and the perform‐
ance of the emission control system
may be affected. The malfunction in‐
dicator lamp may turn on. If this oc‐
curs, return to your Saab dealer/re‐
tailer for service.
Fuels in Foreign Countries
If you plan on driving in another coun‐
try outside the United States or Can‐
ada, the proper fuel might be hard to
find. Never use leaded gasoline or
any other fuel not recommended in
the previous text on fuel. Costly re‐
pairs caused by use of improper fuel
would not be covered by the vehicle
warranty.
To check the fuel availability, ask an
auto club, or contact a major oil com‐
pany that does business in the coun‐
try where you will be driving.
Fuel for ethanol adapted
engines (E85)
If access to E85 is limited then fuel
with a different proportion of ethanol
or normal RON 95 can be used for
filling the tank. The engine's control
management system is adjusted au‐
tomatically according to the amount
of ethanol in the fuel.
E85 fuel must fulfill the CWA 15293 or
SS 155480 standard.
When the temperature is about
14 °F or lower a greater proportion of
gasoline should be used. E85 in com‐
bination with low temperatures could
lead to the car being more difficult to
start. A slightly higher proportion of
gasoline improves the cold start prop‐
erties considerably.
During the engine's warm-up phase
(below 122 °F) engine torque is limi‐
ted when driving with a proportion of
ethanol.
