6.4.3 Formatting an SSD

Function
This command is used to format an SSD. Secure formatting and quick formatting are
supported.
Format
hioadm format -d devicename [-m formatmode] [-t lbasize] [-pt protectiontype] [-pil
location] [-mc metadatamode]

Description
Value
Name of an SSD.
Example: nvme0
Formatting mode.
l 0: quick formatting (Secure Erase Settings=0)
l 1: secure formatting (Secure Erase Settings=1)
If this parameter is not specified, the default value 0 is
used.
Sector size and
l 0: The sector size is 512 B, and the metadata size is
type.
l 1: The sector size is 4 KB, and the metadata size is
l 2: The sector size is 512 B, and the metadata size is
l 3: The sector size is 4 KB, and the metadata size is
l 4: The sector size is 4 KB, and the metadata size is
l 5: The sector size is 520 B, and the metadata size is
l 6: The sector size is 4160 B, and the metadata size
If this parameter is not specified, the sector size and
type are not changed.

The Linux operating system supports all the preceding sector
types (5 and 6 are applicable only to SAS drives). The
Windows operating system supports sector types 0, 1, 5, and 6
(5 and 6 are applicable only to SAS drives). The ESXi system
supports only the 512 B sector type. If this parameter is not
set, the sector type is not changed.
