Chapter 3 Airborne Operations, Pre-Flight Procedures
The following section identifies and details the use of the Headwall Polygon tool to define the flight path and scan
coverage of a UAS mounted sensor. In addition to defining the scan area and path, operators should, as part of the pre-
flight plan, identify the speed altitude and therefore, focus of the sensor prior to the actual flight. The altitude, speed and
focus will dictate the quality of the scan results. Once the altitude and speed are known, the FOV calculator in the

Hyperspec
III application is used to set the exposure time and frame rate, again two critical elements for obtaining the
optimal scan data.

III PROCEDURES
Prior to airborne scanning, the sensor needs to be configured for that particular flight. The steps include setting the focus,
if needed, and setting the exposure and frame rates for the flight. Use the following steps to configure the sensor for flight.
(1) Connect the Nano, with the IMU attached and connected, with the computer operating the Hyperspec
software.
(2) Power ON the computer and then power ON the Nano. Wait for the Nano LED to become green, indicating it is
fully operational.

(3) Open Hyperspec
(4) Once clicked, the FOV Calculator opens, as shown in the following figure.
