Software upgrade configuration
Overview
Device software consists of the BootWare and system software images. Both are required to start up and
run the device.
After the device is powered on, it runs the BootWare image, initializes hardware, and displays the
hardware information.
Then the device runs the system software image, which provides drivers and adaption for hardware and
implements service features.

Software upgrade methods
Upgrade both BootWare and system software at the Boot menu or at the CLI . The following sections
cover how to upgrade them at the CLI. For instructions about how to upgrade them at the Boot menu, see
your switch's release notes.
Upgrading at the CLI falls into two categories: through system reboot and by installing hotfixes.
Figure 32
illustrates their relationship.
