CHAPTER 4: Installing Components

Replacing the hot-swap backplanes

The hot-swap backplane is not
hot-swappable. Before removing or
replacing the backplane, you must first
turn off the server and all peripheral
devices attached to the server, and
remove the AC power cord(s) from the
power supply or wall outlet.
Pressing or pulling on any components
on the backplane could result in damage
to the backplane.
Make sure you do not pinch, bind, or
damage any cables as you install the

Replace the screws you previously removed.

To replace the hot-swap backplane:

30. Make sure that you turn off the server, then unplug the power
cord(s) and all other cables connected to the server.
Unlock the bezel (if necessary) and remove it by pulling it straight off the

front of the server.

Remove all of the hot-swap drive carriers from the server and make note

Remove the system fans and fan board by following the instructions in

Disconnect all cables from the backplane.

Loosen the thumbscrew (1) on the backplane, then slide the backplane

(2) toward the right (facing the back of the chassis) until it disengages the
locking tabs and lift it out of the chassis.

Holding the new backplane by the edges only, align it with the locking

tabs on the chassis, then place it on the locking tabs and slide it to the
left until it stops.
