DRIVE AXLES
CAUTION: The drive axle fasteners are an important attaching part in that they
could affect the performance of vital components and systems, and/or could
result in major repair expense. They must be replaced with one of the same part
number or with an equivalent part if replacement becomes necessary. Do not
use a replacement part of lesser quality or substitute design . Torque values must
be used as specified during reassembly to assure proper retention of this part.

Problem Possible Cause Correction
Clicking noise in turns. Excessive wear or broken Inspect and replace outboard joint
outboard joint. if necessary.
Coast to drive "clunk"., 1 . Loose inboard joint 1. Tighten to specified
flange bolts. torque.
2. Inoperative rubber 2. Replace RH shaft and damper
damper (RH side). assembly and inboard and outboard
seals (use seal service kits).
3. Loose spline .

(RH damper to shaft) .
Shudder or vibration 1 . Incorrect U-joint 1 . Check front end curb height and
on acceleration . angle. correct if necessary .
2. Excessive wear on 2. Check for brinelling of housing
inboard joint housing. bores and replace if necessary.
3. Worn spider assembly . 3 . Check for wear or free rotation
of balls on spider . Replace spider
assembly if necessary.
4. Sticking spider as- 4. Check spider ball to housing
sembly . bore clearance (ball should slide
freely in housing) . Replace housing
or spider assembly as required .
Shimmy vibration at
Tires out of balance Balance front wheels, true for out
highway speeds.
