2.7 Using VMS Factory Installed Software
When the system is first switched on, or is restarted after being powered
down for some time, a power up display similar to the following appears on
the screen:

If this display (ending with the [ESAD:] ?»> prompt) appears, then see
section 2.4 to set up the system default settings before continuing.
This section goes on to describe starting VMS Factory Installed Software
(FIS) for the first time, using commands· entered at the console terminal.
Appendix A describes alternative settings for system defaults. The system
can be set to start VMS FIS automatically, when the system unit is
powered on, provided that this default setting is retained in the system's
battery-backed memory. Default settings are retained when the batteries
are fully charges (after the system has been powered-on for 17 hours), and
are retained for around four days. If lost, default settings can be reentered
as described in Section 2.4.1.
If the system is using the stored system default settings described in
Section 2.4 for use with FIS, a display similar to the following will appear:
