Classic Vintage Vocoder effect
2
The word "Vocoder" actually comes from a special voice processing synthesizer popular in the '70s. The original robotic-
sounding vocoder effect has been used on hundreds of hit records and will be familiar to you once you hear it.

Select VOCODER mode
Check each voice is enabled and its volume level is set to the maximum. In vocoder mode, the harmony voices do not respond
to the split. For this example you can select the Genesys xp in FULL mode.
Now, in order to hear how the harmony voices respond, turn down the volume of the sound assigned to the part. Press
ESCAPE to return to the home screen and then reduce the UPPER volume slider to minimum. Now hold down a note on the
keyboard. You should hear no sound at all. While still holding this note, sing into the mi cro phone. You can sing any note
you like. No matter which note you sing, the harmony voice will only sing the pitch of the note you are holding. To hear the
full effect, adjust the MIC volume to minimum and the GENIUS volume to max i mum.
Singing the same note repeatedly into the microphone, while you play different notes on the keyboard, you can recognize
the classic "vocoder effect". In this way, you can actually speak the words to a song while playing the correct notes on the
keyboard. At the moment we are only hearing Voice 1 from the four harmony voices available. If you play two notes together
on the keyboard, you will hear Voice 1 singing the lowest note while Voice 2 sings the highest note. Playing three notes will
bring in Voice 3 and four notes will add Voice 4. In this way, the four harmony voices allow you to cre ate some fairly complex
vocal group arrangements. Re mem ber that, since the harmony voices will sing any note you play on the keyboard, you can
play wide harmonies using both hands all along the keyboard. Try turning up the MIC volume again so that you can hear
your own voice in addition to the harmony voices and experiment with some of the beautiful effects you can create with your
own five-part vocal group.
