Software Packages
Cisco IOS XR software comprises modular "packages." Each package contains the components to
perform a specific set of router functions, such as routing, security, or line card support.
Adding a package to the router does not affect the operation of the router; it only copies the package
components to the storage device of the router (internal flash disk0:). To make the package functional
on the router, you must "activate" it for one or more cards.
When you activate a package, it is activated for all supported cards by default. But you can also activate
the package for a specific card, allowing you to add more than one version of a package to the router
internal flash disk0:, and to selectively activate only the features required on a specified card.
