Locating Installable Files
To obtain Cisco IOS XR software and version information, use the Cisco IOS XR Software Selector tool
on the following website:
http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Software/IOXPlanner/planner-tool/ioxplanner.cgi?
The Cisco IOS XR Software Selector tool allows you to browse for your software upgrade from a single
interface. You can display and select software by package name, release, and platform. The tool also
includes posting images and extensible markup language (XML) schemes. Choosing a platform, release,
or software feature automatically limits the choices based on your selection, until you arrive at your
preferred software.
The files that you can install from ROMMON are files with the .vm filename extension. These files are
offered as single files and as part of file bundles compressed in files with .tar filename extensions (using
the UNIX tar utility). When you download a compressed tar file, you must decompress the tar file with
a software program before you can install any .vm files in the compressed package.
PIE files with .pie filename extensions cannot be installed from ROMMON and must be installed from

EXEC mode. Some tar files contain both PIE files and .vm files. When the tar files contain both file
types, install the .vm file first, then install the PIE files after the router enters EXEC mode as described
in Chapter 6, "Managing Cisco IOS XR Software Packages."

• Cleans disk0:. The current software packages are replaced with
the new packages. Other files, such as configurations, are
preserved.
When the router is restarted, all Easybake settings are reset so that
