Glossary
performance monitoring. Provides a variety of automatic functions to aid in the maintenance and operation
PM
of the network. PM is continuous, in-service monitoring of transmission quality that uses
software-provisionable performance parameters. Performance parameters are measured for all four layers
of the SONET signal: physical, section, line, and STS path.
parallel optical devices. An inexpensive optical technology that attaches a 12-fiber ribbon cable to a
PODS
VCSEL laser.
point of presence. In OSS, a physical location where an interexchange carrier installed equipment to
POP
interconnect with a local exchange carrier (LEC).
Specifies the traffic policy name and configures a traffic policy.
policy map
packet-over-SONET. Packet-over-SONET enables core routers to send native IP packets directly over
POS
Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) or Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) frames.
Two power shelves are installed in each chassis. The type of power shelf varies by installation. The
power shelves
available types are: Delta AC Power Shelf, Wye AC Power Shelf, and DC Power Shelf.
Point-to-Point Protocol. Successor to SLIP that provides router-to-router and host-to-network
PPP
connections over synchronous and asynchronous circuits. Whereas SLIP was designed to work with IP,
PPP was designed to work with several network layer protocols, such as IP, IPX, and ARA. PPP also
has built-in security mechanisms, such as CHAP and PAP. PPP relies on two protocols: LCP and NCP.
Denotes a card or process that performs a system task; in a redundant configuration, there is an inactive
primary
standby card or process available to become the primary. Active cards or processes are also sometimes
denoted as active.
The active Route Processor installed on a chassis. Each chassis contains two RPs, one to act as the
primary RP
primary, or active, RP, and the other as the standby, or redundant, RP.
present working directory. The directory defined by the cd command. Use the pwd command to show
pwd
what directory or file system is specified as the default by the cd command.
Q
quality of service. A set of parameters that describe a flow of data, such as: guaranteed bandwidth,
QoS
delay, and delivery guarantee.
Special Ethernet message sent by the SC when the election algorithm is first run if it does not detect a
query
beacon message.
R
An event denoting the insertion or removal of an entire line card or fabric chassis into or from a system.
rack OIR
In the dSC context, it indicates the insertion or removal of an SC into the control plane through the
Control Plane Ethernet. It does not have any relationship with fabric OIR. See also dSC.
regional Bell operating company. Seven regional telephone companies formed by the breakup of AT&T.
RBOC
RBOCs do not cross state boundaries.
