32 bit File Allocation Table. A method of storing information on a hard disk. FAT32 supports drives of
FAT32
to 2 terabytes and pathnames greater that 256 characters.
fan controller. Two fan controller cards are installed in every line card chassis as a redundant pair to
FC
manage the fan assemblies; there is a BITS timing connector on the fan controller card.
fast cycle random access memory. A fast low latency version of SDRAM used within the Cisco CRS-1
FCRAM
Series routing system.
forward error correction. FEC is a class of methods for controlling errors in a one-way communication
FEC
system. FEC sends extra information along with the data, which can be used by the receiver to check and
correct the data. FEC is used to correct errors on links including the internal line card to fabric PAROLI
links.
Forwarding Information Base. Database that stores information about switching of data packets. A FIB
FIB
is based on information in the Routing Information Base (RIB). It is the optimal set of selected routes
that are installed in the line cards for forwarding. See also RIB.
fiber module. A module installed in the fabric chassis.
FM
Traffic passing technique used by switches and bridges in which traffic received on an interface is sent
flooding
out all the interfaces of that device except the interface on which the information was originally
received.
Process of sending a frame toward its ultimate destination by way of an internetworking device.
forwarding
Industry-standard, switched data link layer protocol that handles multiple virtual circuits using
Frame Relay
high-level data link control (HDLC) encapsulation between connected devices. Frame Relay is more
efficient than X.25, the protocol for which it generally is considered a replacement. See also HDLC and
cHDLC.
fast reroute. Automatically reroutes traffic on a label switch path (LSP) if a node or link in an LSP fails.
FRR
FRR reduces the loss of packets traveling over an LSP.
field replaceable unit. A component of the Cisco CRS-1 router that can be ordered individually.
FRU
File Transfer Protocol. Application protocol, part of the TCP/IP protocol stack, used for transferring
FTP
files between network nodes. FTP is defined in RFC 959.
G
gigabits per second. The amount of data that can be sent in a fixed amount of time. 1 gigabit = 2
Gbps
1,073,741,824 bits.
Gigabit Ethernet. Standard for a high-speed Ethernet, approved by the IEEE 802.3z standards committee
GE
in 1996.
The Ethernet speed for the Cisco CRS-1 Series router control bus running between all chassis.
