Preface
This preface explains the objectives, intended audience, and organization of the Cisco CRS-1 Series
Carrier Routing System Getting Started Guide, and provides information on obtaining additional
information on the Cisco CRS-1 Series Carrier Routing System.
Introduction
This document provides an overview of the concepts, technologies, and procedures used to install,
configure, and operate a Cisco CRS-1 Series Carrier Routing System router (Cisco CRS-1 Series router).
A Cisco CRS-1 router can consist of an extensive hierarchy of racks, logical routers, shelves, cards, and
ports. The Cisco CRS-1 router is shipped with one default logical router (LR). An LR is a collection of
line cards, Route Processors, and other assignable or configurable resources, such as interfaces specific
to your network that together form a complete router within the Cisco CRS-1 router system. An LR
contains its own control plane, data plane, and management plane. The Cisco IOS XR command-line
interface (CLI), an enhanced Cisco IOS-like CLI, is the new CLI interface to configure and manage the
Cisco CRS-1 router.
Although the Cisco CRS-1 router is designed to operate as a multiple chassis system that allows for the
Note
configuration of multiple LRs and all their interfaces and resources, Cisco IOS XR Software Releases 2
and 3 support one chassis and one LR. In a single-chassis system, only one LR is necessary or operable.
