raised slightly above the fender for radio recep-
tion. Do not remove the set to correct this condi-
tion until all previous checks on the antenna have
been made with the car in a fairly strong signal
area.
e. Antenna Trimmer
If antenna is not trimmed, the set will have
weak reception. Antenna trimming should always
be performed before the new car is delivered, or
after any repair work is completed. See Note 83a.
f. Signal Seeking Selector Tube
(AM Radios Only)
Check tube by disconnecting antenna, turning
volume on full, and tapping tube with eraser end of
a pencil. An intermittent tube will give a crack-
ing noise in the speakers. Replace tube, if found
defective in this test. Check tube on tester and
replace, if not up to specifications. Be sure to
use correct replacement tube.
It is possible to check, or remove and install,
selector tube without removing receiver from car
by following procedure outlined:
1. Remove steering column lower cover as de-
scribed in Section 15, Note 2.
2. Remove two screws securing duct that con-
nects center outlet boot to air conditioner cross-
bar duct, and position boot out of way.
3. Remove four screws holding bottom cover
plate to receiver assembly and remove cover
plate.
g. Power Transistor
A thump should be heard when the radio is
turned on. If thump is not hear, check transistor.
The procedure for removing and installing the
transistor is described in Note 87.
85. Receiver Unit
Removal and Installation
The procedure for removing and installing the
receiver is described in Section 15, Note 6.
86. Front Speaker
Removal and Installation
The procedure for removing and installing the
front speaker is described in Section 15, Note 7.
87. Transistor
Removal and Installation
a. Removal
1. Remove receiver unit as described in Section
15, Note 6a.
2. Remove two screws securing heat sink in
receiver unit and remove heat sink from receiver.
3. Remove nut that secures transistor to heat
sink, unsolder leads and remove transistor.
b. Installation
1. Install transistor to heat sink and secure
with nut.
2. Solder leads to transistor terminals.
NOTE:
Use only resin type solder and grasp
terminal with long nose pliers to prevent heat
from damaging transistor.
3. Position heat sink in receiver unit and se-
cure with two screws.
4. Install receiver unit as described in Section
15, Note 6b.
88. Rear Speaker and Grille
Removal—Except Convertibles
Access to rear speaker is gained through trunk
compartment.
1. Disconnect speaker lead (green) from con-
nector at rear of speaker.
2. Remove four nuts securing speaker to rear
compartment shelf and remove speaker.
When installing speaker, torque nuts evenly (12
inch-pounds maximum) to prevent speaker dis-
tortion.
89. Rear Seat Speaker and
Grille Removal—Convertibles
Access to rear seat speaker and grille is gained
through rear passenger compartment.
1. Remove
two

speaker assembly at rear top center of back seat.
2. Lift speaker assembly out and up at bottom
of recess in center of back seat.
3. Disconnect speaker lead (green) from con-
nector at rear of speaker.
4. Remove four sheet metal screws securing
speaker to baffle and remove speaker.
5. Remove
four

screws
securing
speaker grille to baffle and remove grille. It is
not necessary to remove rear speaker grille when
removing speaker, unless it is to be replaced.
