snap ring. Using two pairs of pliers, grip retainer
and thrust collar and squeeze until snap ring is
forced onto retainer, Fig. 12-16.
2. Place four or five drops of light engine oil
in drive housing bushing. Make sure thrust collar
is in place against snap ring and retainer, and
slide armature and clutch assembly into place in
drive housing, engaging shift lever with clutch.
3. Position center frame over armature. Posi-
tion frame against drive housing, being careful
not to damage brushes.
NOTE: If the seal between frame and sole-
noid case has been damaged, apply a non-
hardening sealing compound to the entire area.
4. Place four or five drops of light engine oil
in bushing in commutator end frame. Place leather
brake washer on armature shaft and slide commu-
tator end frame onto shaft, and secure with two
through bolts.

5. To assembly solenoid, proceed as follows:
a. Assemble push rod assembly by installing
contact washer on push rod stem, and then install
insulating washer, spring, and retainer. Secure
components on stem with spring retainer cap.
b. Install push rod assembly in solenoid housing
and install contact cover in position, securing
cover to housing with two screws and seals.
c. Install two nuts and seals to "motor" and"S"
terminals.
d. Place solenoid return spring in position and
install solenoid, rotating assembly clockwise. Se-
cure solenoid assembly to starter housing with
two screws.
NOTE: If seal between solenoid assembly
and starter assembly has been damaged, apply
a non-hardening sealing compound to this area.
e. Connect field coil connector to the "motor"
terminal.
b. Installation
1. Position starter assembly at flywheel housing
and secure with two mounting studs, and tighten
to 40 foot-pounds.
2. Connect ignition switch, coil feed, battery
lead and neutral safety switch wires at solenoid
terminals.
3. Connect battery cable at battery.

19. Distributor Contact Points
a. Inspection
Remove distributor cap by inserting a screw-
drive in upper slotted end of cap retainer, press
down and turn until latch is disengaged, Fig. 12-17.
Pitted or oxidized points should be replaced and
re-set. Contact points with an oily surface should
be inspected for a pitted or oxidized condition. The
source of oil should be located and corrected. If
the points are worn evenly and show a uniform
gray surface, they do not need attention, provided
the dwell angle is within limits (28° to 32°).
b. Removal
1. Remove two screws that secure rotor cap to
distributor and remove cap.
