PN/PN coupler

9.4.1

Principle of operation

Application
The PN/PN coupler links two Ethernet subnets with one another and exchanges data. The
maximum size of the data that can be transferred is 16-byte input data and 16-byte output data.
As a device, the PN/PN coupler has two PROFINET interfaces, each of which is linked to a
subnet. During configuring, two I/O devices are made from this one PN/PN coupler; this means
that there is one I/O device for each station with its own subnet. The other part of the PN/PN
coupler is called the coupling partner. Once configuring has been completed, the two parts
are merged.
Example
The following example shows that the two networks are independent of one another. This
means that for each PROFINET IO network you assign dedicated device names. In the
following figure, these are the device names "Subnet1" in network 1 and "Subnet2" in network
2.
