6.2 Distress calls

Making a designated distress call
When making a Distress call y ou can specify the nature
of t he distress, i f G PS data is not a vailable you must a lso
specify your c oordinates.
Note: Your r adio must h ave an MMSI n umber s aved
before DSC functions can be used.
From the Distress call m enu:
Menu > DSC Calls >
Distress calls
1. Select a distress type from the list.
• Undesignated
• Fire
• Flooding
• Collision
• Grounding
• Listing
• Sinking
• Adrift
• Abandoning
• Piracy
• Man overboard
If y our r adio has a GPS fix then the distress type and
coordinates are displayed, o therwise you will b e
prompted to enter y our p osition coordinates.
2. If p rompted, e nter y our p osition coordinates and
local t ime using the
Rotary knob or t he Channel U p
and Channel D own buttons to enter t he relevant
details.
3. When complete press the
OK button.
4. Follow the steps for Making a Distress Call t o transmit
the distress alert.

Making a distress call
In an emergency you can use your u nit t o mak
automatic DSC distress call.
With the spring loaded cover o pen:
1. Press and hold the
DISTRESS button for 3 seconds.
Once the DISTRESS button is pressed a 3 second
count d own will b egin, w hen the count d own reaches
zero the DSC distress call i s transmitted.
The distress call i s repeated automatically until i t i s
acknowledged.
2. Press and hold the
PTT button, t hen slowly and
clearly speak the details of t he distress in the
following format:
MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY
This is <state name of v essel 3 times>
MAYDAY <state name of v essel 1 t ime>
My position is
<state latitude and longitude, o r t rue
bearing and distance from a known point.>
I a m <state nature of d istress e.g. sinking, o n fire
etc.>
I h ave <state number o f p ersons on board and any
other i nformation — drifting, fl ares fired etc.>
I R EQUIRE IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE
OVER

Making a Mayday call
In an emergency you can use your u nit t o mak
Mayday call.
1. Press the

2. Press and hold the
PTT button.
3. Slowly and clearly speak the details of t he distress:
MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY
This is <state name of v essel 3 times>
MAYDAY <state name of v essel 1 t ime>
My position is
<state latitude and longitude, o r t rue
bearing and distance from a known point.>
I a m <state nature of d istress e.g. sinking, o n fire
etc.>
I h ave <state number o f p ersons on board and any

I R EQUIRE IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE
OVER
4. Release the
PTT button.
5. If a n acknowledgement i s not r eceived then repeat
steps 2 to 4 above

Cancelling a distress call b efore
transmission
T o cancel a distress call b efore it i s transmitted follow
the steps below:
1. Release the
DISTRESS button before the countdown
timer c ompletes.
When the button is released you will b e returned to
normal o peration.
