3.2 EMC installation guidelines

Raymarine® equipment a nd accessories conform to
the appropriate Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
regulations, t o minimize electromagnetic interference
between equipment a nd minimize the effect s uch
interference could have on the performance of y our
system
Correct i nstallation is required to ensure that E MC
performance is not c ompromised.
Note:
In areas of e
xtreme EMC interference, s ome slight
interference may be noticed. W here this occurs the
product a nd the source of t he interference should be
separated by a greater d istance.
For optimum EMC performance we recommend that
wherever p ossible:
• R
aymarine® equipment a nd cables connected to it
are:
– At l east 1 m (3 ft) f rom any equipment t ransmitting
or c ables carrying radio signals e.g. VHF radios,
cables and antennas. In the case of S SB radios, t he
distance should be increased to 2 m (7 ft).
– More than 2 m (7 ft) f rom the path of a Radar b eam.
A Radar b eam can normally be assumed to spread
20 degrees above and below the radiating element.
• The product i s supplied power f rom a separate battery
from that u sed for e ngine start. This is important t o
prevent e rratic behavior and data loss which can occur
if t he engine start d oes not h ave a separate battery.
• Only Raymarine® specified cables are used.
• Cables are not c ut o r e xtended, u nless doing so is
detailed in the installation instructions.
Note:
Where constraints on the installation prevent a ny
of t he above recommendations
maximum possible separation between different
items of e lectrical e quipment, t o provide the best
conditions for E MC performance throughout t he
installation.

Suppression ferrites
• R
aymarine cables may be pre-fitted or s upplied with
suppression ferrites. These are important f or c orrect
EMC performance. If f errites are supplied separately
to the cables (i.e. not p re-fitted), y ou must fi t t he
supplied ferrites, u sing the supplied instructions.
• If a ferrite has to be removed for a ny purpose (e.g.
installation or m aintenance), i t m ust b e replaced in the
original p osition before the product i s used.
• Use only ferrites of t he correct t ype, s upplied by
Raymarine or i ts authorized dealers.
• Where an installation requires multiple ferrites to be
added to a cable, a dditional c able clips should be
used to prevent s tress on the connectors due to the
extra weight o f t he cable.
Connections to other e quipment
Requirement f or f errites on non- c ables.
If y our i s to be connected to other e quipment u sing
a cable not s upplied by , a suppression ferrite MUST
always be attached to the end of t he cable near t he .
, a lways ensure the
