CHARGING SYSTEM
BATTERY CHARGING I
The battery gives off explosive gases; keep sparks,
flames and cigarettes away. Provide adequate
ventilation when charging.
Turn power
ON/OFF
at the charger, not at the battery
terminals.
Remove the battery (page 17-41.
Connect the charger positive
(+I
cable to the battery
positive
(+)
terminal.
Connect the charger negative
(-1
cable t o the battery
negative
(-1
terminal.
CHARGING CURRENT/TlME
Standard:
Quick
CAUTION:
Quick-charging should only be done in an emergency;
slow charging is preferred.
For battery charging, do not exceed the charging
current and time specified on the battery. Using
excessive current or extending the charging time
may damage the battery.
CHARGING SYSTEM INSPECTION
CHARGING VOLTAGE INSPECTION
If the engine must be running t o do some work, make
sure the area is well-ventilated. Never run the engine
in an enclosed area. The exhaust contains poisonous
carbon monoxide gas that may cause loss ofconscious-
ness and may lead t o death.
NOTF:
Be sure the battery is in good condition before perform-
ing this test.
