6A1-24 2.5 LITER L4 ENGINE
MAIN BEARING INSTALLATION
(WITHOUT REMOVING THE
CRANKSHAFT)
Install or C onnect (Figures 5 and 42)
Tool Required:
J 8080 Main Bearing Remover/Installer
1. Upper main bearing inserts.
• Insert tool J 8080 into a crankshaft main
bearing hole.
• Apply engine oil to the proper sized inserts.
• Insert the plain end of the insert (without the
b e a rin g ta ng ) of the inse rt betw een the
crankshaft and the notched side of the block.
• Rotate the crankshaft to " roll" the insert into
the block.
• Remove the tool.
2. Lower main bearing inserts to the main bearing
caps.
• Make sure the inserts are of the proper size.
• Apply engine oil to the inserts.
M easure
Main bearing clearance and crankshaft end
play. Refer to " Crankshaft and Main Bearing
Installation" in this section.

CAMSHAFT INSTALLATION

Install or C onnect (Figure 3, 43, and 44)
• C o a t th e
c a m s h a ft
S u p p le m e n t (GM p a rt n u m b e r 1051396) or
equivalent. Coat the bearing journals with engine
oil.
1. Camshaft (108) into the block (119). Take care not to
damage the camshaft bearings (109).

Im portant
• Align the timing marks.
2. Screws (103).
Tighten
S c r e w s (103) to 9.0 N m (80 in. lbs.
FRONT COVER
INSTALLATION
Install or C onnect (Figures 5, 45 and 46)
Tool Required:
J 34995 Crankshaft Front Cover
Oil Seal Installer
1. Tool J 34995 into the front cover seal.
• Apply a 10 mm (3/s-inch) wide by 5 mm (3/i6-inch)
thick bead of RTV sealer to the oil pan at the timing
gear cover sealing surface.
• Apply a 6 mm (1 /4-inch) by 3 mm (Ve-inch) thick bead
of RTV to the timing gear cover at the block sealing
surface. Refer to figure 45.

g e a r c o v e r so th a t th e fr o n t
crankshaft seal is p ro perly c e n te re d aro u nd the
c ra n k s h a ft.
The s e a l m u s t b e c e n te re d
p rev e n t dam age during hub installation.
2. Timing gear cover, with J 34995 in place, to the
block.
