PINION AND RING GEAR
Inspect
V
• Pinion and ring g ear teeth for cracking, chipping,
scoring, or excessive wear.
• Pinion splines for wear.
• Pinion flange splines for wear.
• T h e fit of the pinion on the pinion flange.
• T h e sealing surface of the pinion flan ge for nicks,
burrs, or rough tool m arks w hich w ould ca u s e
d a m a g e to the se a ls ' inside d iam eter and result in
an oil leak.
• R ep lace all worn or broken parts.
• Ring and pinion g ears are m atched sets and are
both replaced any tim e a replacem en t of eith er is
necessary.

BEARINGS

Inspect
B earings visually and by feel.
T h e b earing s should feel sm ooth w hen oiled and
rotated w hile applying as much hand pressure as
possible.
T h e large end of the bearing rollers for wear. This is
w here tap ered roller bearing w ear is most evident.

c u p s for w ear, c rac ks,
scoring.
Bearings and cups are only replaced as sets.
If the rear axle w as operated for an exten ded period
of tim e with very loose bearings, the ring g ear and
drive pinion will also require replacem en t.
Low m ilea g e b earings m ay have m inute scratches
and pits on the rollers and the bearing cups from the
initial preload. Do not replace a bearing for this
reason.
B earing caps for cracks or chips.
SHIMS
Inspect
• Shim s for cracks and chips. D a m a g e d shims should
be replaced with an eq u ally sized service shim.

Tools R equired:

J 8614-01 Pinion Flang e H older
Lubricate all parts with axle lubricant.
Pinion rear bearing (13) onto the pinion.
