DPI Emulation Modes

The 3400 printer operates under two modes: Advanced and Emulation
mode. Advanced mode operates under 5 mil or 203 dpi mode. Emulation
mode operates under 10 mil or 100 dpi mode and recognizes only 86XX
commands. The 3440 printer operates under three modes: 406 dpi, 203 dpi,
and 100 dpi. When the 3440 printer is in 100 dpi mode, it recognizes only
the 86XX command set and prints at 10 mil resolution. When the 3440
printer is in 203 dpi mode, it recognizes the full IPL command set and prints
at 5 mil resolution. When the printer is in 406 dpi mode (native 3440 mode),
it recognizes the same command set as the 203 dpi mode but prints at 406
dpi resolution.

Storage and Image Memory

You may allocate storage memory on the 3400 printer and the printer uses
the remaining memory for imaging. The 3440 only uses storage memory for
storing formats, pages, fonts, graphics, and tables. Formats pages, fonts, and
graphics occupy varying locations and amounts of memory depending on
their size. Tables occupy a fixed location and amount of memory.
In the 3440 printer, storage memory and image memory are not contiguous.
Unused storage memory cannot be used for imaging. Image memory is
dynamic memory used during printing to create a bitmap image of the label
(imaging).
Both printers are capable of imaging a label with varying amounts of
memory. They are also capable of imaging and printing a label even if the
entire label cannot be imaged within the amount of memory available.
However, the more image memory available, the faster the printer can
image and print a label.

TrueType Support

The 3440 printer supports TrueType outline fonts. These fonts are not
resident in the printer, but you can download them using the PrintSet
printer installation software or the IPL command set.

Increased Storage Capacity

3400 printers provide a maximum of less than 128K bytes of memory for
format storage. 3440 printers provide more memory for configuration,
formats, fonts, and UDCs without the memory expansion option. The
maximum number of formats has increased from 19 to 99.
