Quantum and Evolution Series Installation and Operating Handbook
Each channel can be treated as being 8-bits wide, or alternateively as four 2-
bit wide slots. Consequently, in order to match the specific GSM equipment
that the Sat-ABIS interface is connected to, the menus allow the
configuration of voice and signalling as channels or slots.
It is also necessary to define the constituent parts of each T1/E1 as voice or
signal in order to allow the modem to apply the correct compression
techniques to the data. Each T1/E1 can contain both channels and slots
subject to the following restriction: the voice portion of the traffic can use
channels or slots but not both, and similarly, the signal portion of the traffic
can use channels or slots but not both.

Description:
At this juncture, it has already been determined whether voice and
signaling will use channels or slots (see the Edit-Tx-Interface-Port-Voice-
Signal Screen).
If channels have been selected, then these screens allow the allocation
of any channels (timeslots) 0 to 31 (for E1 or 0 to 23 for T1) to voice and
signal as appropriate.
