SHIPPER is used for documents that typically contain shaded areas and boxes. This mode
tries to enhance the text areas, but ignore the shaded background.
RECOG is similar to SHIPPER, but it uses more edge enhancement to improve the ability
for image recognition. Image recognition, also known as ICR or OCR, is used by software
programs to convert images into data. To convert successfully, the software must be able
to match the image shapes of the text to a known shape of a character. This setting does
not normally give the best image for reading from the screen, but is better for ICR/OCR.
DROP is used with color dropout filters. When using color dropout filters, the desired
result is normally to ignore certain areas of the specified color. ACE always tries to
enhance the image, so in certain cases, data dropped by the filter could be enhanced by
the ACE. To minimize this effect, the ACE is used only to enhance slight features. This
means that it only has a slight effect on improving the image, but it does not pick up
unwanted colors.
NO ACE is a simple threshold level. What is seen by the scanner is simply transferred to
the host PC without any manipulation. In many cases, the image can be perfectly
acceptable on this setting. It is normally suited to clean documents with good contrast and
no background.
NOTE:
All of the above settings can be set to different sensitivities (S value). In general, the
lower the value, the lighter the image. In some cases, changing the sensitivity can also
change how the selected ACE mode works.
To get the best imaging results from your scanner, follow these guidelines:
• Decide what kind of document you scan, then select the ACE mode to suit it.
• Make sure the monitor displays at a 1:1 ratio. This is one pixel of data to one screen
pixel. If you do not do this, the software will scale the image to fit the screen, which
can produce a poor image. If you are unsure about the image, print it out on paper.
This should give you something as good as the actual scanned document.
