2.8 PDUs for Cluster Platform and Scalable Visualization Array (SVA)

This section describes the power distribution units (PDUs) used in HP Cluster Platform and
Scalable Visualization Array (SVA) configurations.

2.8.1 PDU for Cluster Platform

Scalable computing systems, such as HP Cluster Platform, require enormous amounts of electricity.
A typical 42U rack with dual-processor servers and storage requires more than 12 kilowatts of
power. The 64-bit servers and higher capacity drives can increase the power requirement to 15
kilowatts of power per rack. The heat load for this rack is almost 42,000 BTU per hour (about the
same as for a typical one-story house). To address this need, HP Cluster Platform uses a device
called a modular power distribution unit (PDU). The PDUs integrate power outlets, power
cables, and circuit breakers on each rack.
These PDUs consist of two main parts: the control unit, which can be a zero-U mount (see
Figure
2-31) or a 1U mount (see
on your configuration. Each PDU has one control unit and four power strips. The control unit
