VLAN support and tagging: support complete 802.1Q (4,096 VLAN IDs) and 256 VLANs
simultaneously
Traffic prioritization (802.1p): allows real-time traffic classification into 8 priority levels
mapped to 4 queues
Per-port broadcast throttling: selectively configure broadcast control on heavy traffic port
uplinks
Stacking capability: single IP address management for a virtual stack of up to 16 switches
HP Auto-MDIX: automatically adjusts for straight-through or crossover cables on all
10/100/1000 ports
Source port filters: allows only specified ports to communicate with each other
Troubleshooting: ingress/egress port monitoring enables network problem solving
The principal difference between the two models is in the number of ports, as shown in
Figure
2-12. The following sections describe the HP ProCurve 2848 switch.

2.6.4 ProCurve 2848 Switch Overview

The HP ProCurve 2848 is a multi-port Gigabit switch that can be connected to an external
redundant power supply (RPS) unit. The characteristics of the HP ProCurve 2848 switch include:
48 auto-sensing 10/100/1000Base-T RJ-45 ports
dual-personality ports — 10/100/1000Base-T RJ-45 ports or mini-GBIC slots for optional
fiber-optic connectivity such as Gigabit-SX, LX, or LH
plug-and-play networking
automatic learning of the network addresses
support for the Spanning Tree Protocol to eliminate network loops
96 Gbps backplane with up to 71.4 mpps
stacking capability: single IP address management for a virtual stack of up to 16 switches
port security to prevent unauthorized access using MAC address lockdown

2.6.4.1 Front View of the HP ProCurve 2848 Switch

The HP ProCurve 2848 switch has 48 auto-sensing 10/100/1000Base-T RJ-45 ports that are spread
across the front panel. To the right are four triple-speed copper gigabit ports, and below these
are four mini-GBIC slots that accept fiber-optic cables. These eight slots are referred to as
dual-personality ports because you can use either the copper port or the corresponding fiber-optic
port. Only four of the ports can be used at any one time. By default, the RJ-45 connectors are
enabled. If a mini-GBIC is installed in a slot, it is enabled and the associated RJ-45 connector is
disabled. If the mini-GBIC is removed, the associated RJ-45 port is automatically re-enabled. ???
