MDS 9124 switches have fixed configurations with 8, 16, and 24 full-rate 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel
ports. The 8 and 16-port switches can be upgraded in 8-port increments with a software expansion
license.
MDS 9124e 12-port Fabric switch and the MDS 9124e 24-port Fabric switch for the c-Class
BladeSystem have fixed configurations with 8 internal/4 external or 16 internal/8 external full-
rate 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel ports. The 12-port switch can be upgraded to a 24-port switch with a
software expansion license.
MDS 9020/9120/9140 switches have fixed configurations with 20 and 40 Fibre Channel ports,
respectively:
MDS 9120 has 4 full-rate Fibre Channel ports and 16 2 Gb/s oversubscribed ports.
MDS 9140 has 8 full-rate Fibre Channel ports and 32 2 Gb/s oversubscribed ports.
MDS 9020 has a fixed configuration with 20 full-rate 4 Gb/s Fibre Channel ports.
C-series Fibre Channel switches are supported for use with FCIP through the HP IP Distance
Gateway. (See

Model naming

The C-series Fibre Channel switches are named MDS 9xnn. The 95nn switches (Multilayer Directors)
are director or core switches. The nn value indicates the number of slots available for supervisors and
port modules. The 92nn switches are mid-range switches; the 91nn switches are entry-level switches;
the MDS 9020 switch is an entry-level 4 Gb/s switch (Multilayer Fabric switches). For the 92nn, 91nn,
and 90nn, the nn value indicates the number of fixed ports.
Multiprotocol and Multiservice products are designated with the i suffix, such as the MDS 9216i and
MDS 9222i, or as IP storage services modules, such as the IPS-4, IPS-8, 14/2, and 18/4. For IPS
products, the number indicates the total number of IP ports available. For example, the IPS-4 has 4
IP ports and the IPS-8 has 8 IP ports.

NOTE:
Starting with release 4.1(1b), MDS 9000 SAN-OS software is rebranded to MDS 9000 NX-OS
software. Software prior to NX-OS 4.1(1b) uses the SAN-OS name and remains on the 3. x code
stream. NX-OS is designed to operate with switches running SAN-OS software.

When using NX-OS, SAN-OS, and FabricWare in the same fabric, HP strongly recommends up-
grading all fabric switches in the SAN to the latest supported software version. All switches in the
same major NX-OS/SAN-OS/FabricWare family must use the same software version. When up-
